A Ritual for the Winter Solstice
Trataka, also called candle gazing, is a meditation practice where one keeps their eyes focused on a single flame in front of them. Candle gazing helps to maintain focus and concentration, purifies the eyes, reduces stress and anxiety, and rejuvenates tired eyes that look at screens. It is a perfect way to celebrate the return of light, which will slowly return each day after the winter solstice.
How to do Trataka Meditation:
Light a candle, and place it 2 feet in front of you at eye level. Turn any lights off in the room so the room can be dark. Take a comfortable seat. Bring your gaze to the candle’s flame and soften the face. Try not to blink as you gaze at the candle. When your eyes begin to water, close your eyes and bring your awareness inward. Allow the eyes to rest for five deep breaths. Bring your gaze to the candle’s flame, and again try not to blink as you gaze at the candle. When your eyes begin to water, once again, close your eyes and bring your awareness inward. Allow the eyes to rest for five deep breaths. Repeat this two more times. After finishing your last round. Keep your eyes closed and sit in the stillness for a moment, giving thanks or offering up a prayer of gratitude.
