self care for the summer season
Ayurveda has a self-care regimen for each season. Summer is considered Pitta season when the qualities of Fire and Water dominate the season. These qualities build as we move through summer. July through September is when we can begin to see and feel the effects of these qualities. The fire element brings a quality of dryness to the body and heat. You may see this in the skin or feel it in the body. As the heat in the body builds, it can disturb sleep and slow down our digestion. It also brings a lack of energy and lethargy. Ayurveda suggests eating foods that are easy to digest, two to three light meals, and avoiding snacking. Eating frequently or overeating slows down digestion and increases the quality of heaviness and lethargy in the body.
Due to the increased heat, the body requires more liquids, like water and sweet juicy fruits and vegetables. Favor foods that are; sweet, bitter, astringent, light, and liquidy. When cooking, ghee is the preferred oil during the summer months because of its cooling nature. Olive oil is best for drizzling over vegetables and salads. Avoid foods that are spicy, salty, sour, and deep fried. Avoid smoothies (milk and fruit combinations). They cause digestion to slow down and heaviness in the body. Enjoy juicy fruits like mangos, melons, grapes, and pomegranates instead. Avoiding alcohol or having minimal amounts will decrease the quality of burning and dryness in the body.
To avoid feeling fatigued. Ayurveda suggests taking a short nap (20-30 minutes) during the day. Taking cool showers or soaking the feet in cool water will release heat from the body. Ayurveda recommends avoiding hot water on the head during this time of year. Rinse the head with warm or cool water while in the shower. Stay indoors from 12 pm to 4 pm when the sun is at its hottest and, when outside, wear thin, light clothes made from natural fibers like cotton. Avoid exertion and strenuous exercise during this season. Exercising in the morning before 10 am will reduce heat and fatigue in the body, or in the evenings when the days begin to cool down. The intensity of summer can cause heated emotions like irritation, anger, or frustration. Enjoy activities that bring ease and enjoyment. Meditate, journal, spend time in nature, and keep good company and a light heart.
